"Face reality as it is, not as it was or as you wish it to be."
US-MTA TACTIP #1 - Make reality the core of your training.
By John Viol
As the saying goes - "Train like you fight, fight like you train."
Problem 1: Incorrect training equipment diminishes the reality in training for actual encounters.
Most students forget when they are training that the actual encounters they are training for will be with a real person. The common mistake made is with using cylindrical heavy bags and other striking targets which do not program actions for reality or realistic targeting. The focus, when training with generic bags or targets, is on the exercise of the techniques and training, not the actual encounter. Generic training targets have no parts of anatomy or anatomical weak points to focus on or strong points to avoid; whereas in real encounters, real people will.
US-MTA Solution 1 - Train with an anatomically correct target - a Torso Target like pictured below.
In an actual encounter, you will be looking at a human target who will be looking right back at you. You will be confronting an attacker who has an anatomical structure similar to yours. You need to train with that reality in mind in order to fight like you train.
